Edible Playgrounds

This year we have been busy planting and growing in our Edible Playgrounds.   These are new additions to our school grounds and provide each campus with a rich resource for outdoor learning, particularly in National Curriculum subjects such as Science and the food and nutrition aspects of Design Technology.

The children are learning about the journey from seed to plate and developing new skills and knowledge along the way by using tools and looking after the plants as they grow.

Food harvested throughout the year is used in school meals or as ingredients for curriculum cooking lessons.

We previously achieved the Food for Life Bronze Award for our work on eating, cooking and growing fresh healthy food.

A food focus group met regularly to discuss what progress was being made on the school dinners to make them more enjoyable for everyone:

  • the school’s Head Chef from each campus,
  • one Midday Supervisor from each campus,
  • our School Business Manager,
  • one class teacher from each campus
  • School Council pupils from Year 2 up to Year 6.

Our Food Group is visited Stonebridge City Farm to look at the processes our food goes through before arriving on our plates. See what we got up to here: Stonebridge City Farm
