Every child in Year 3, Year 5 and Year 6 take part in swimming lessons in our school.
Year 6 children are expected to be able to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- perform a safe self-rescue in different water based situations
- use a range of strokes effectively
Our children use Southglade and Ken Martin leisure centres for their swimming and are taught by trained instructors at these pools. Over the course of a half term the children receive an hour long lesson each week, building up skills and stamina to be able to achieve the end of KS2 objectives.
Currently 69% are able to swim 25 metres, 83% can use a range of strokes and 38% can perform a self-rescue in different water base situations.
We predict with recent changes to the year groups accessing swimming that the percentage increase.
